Knife Combat in the Special Forces overlooked by Mixed Martial Arts

John Rambo, Commando and other popular Hollywood Icons are all famous for their Hand to Hand Combat Prowess especially with Knives. The Knife is not just a symbol of lethality it is the dagger that is displayed on the shoulder patch of our U.S. Special Forces. The knife / dagger stands for the unconventional and silent nature of the Special Forces. Unfortunately Knife training is quite "under par " persay in the military. With all of todays technology and modern weaponry. Basic Hand to Hand and knife combatives are severely overlooked. The Army boasts of the new " Modern Army Combative" system, yet it is really nothing more that combat sport or Mixed Martial Arts. For some reason the military's senior leadership is worried about selling the "UFC" style training to todays young troops and prospective recruits. This mentality allows every "wannabe, tough guy, UFC champ" soldier from the ages of 17 to 25 to actually practice the techniques they may not be privy to learn if they werent in the service. It is whats hot. Nobody wants to go into the far less glamourous and bloody part of unarmed and knife combat. Noone wants to address the fact that death is an iminent outcome. The less than popular down and dirty combat techniques that soldiers need to be taught are just not taught. Unfortunately Soldiers and Marines are not UFC Cage fighters. There are no submissions in combat. There are no time limits or rules or weight classes. There are no cheering crowds or championship belts. there is only reality and death. So why is our Military being trained in Mixed Martial Arts or Combat Sport? Every soldier carries a knife for utility and for combat. Let's start training our G.I.s in the skills of their trade. I believe that Mixed Martial Arts is excellent for physical training; however reality is that we fight as we train. Combat Sports techniques have no place in combat. May Training Events

The month of May 2007 will bring about a series of training events for the Dark Knight Protective Agency and Academy in Up State New York. May 7,9,14,and 16 Andy Curtiss will be conducting a series of Martial Arts Seminars in the following subjects: Kata interpretation, and Bunkai, Standing Grappling, Knife and counTer Knife techniques I and II. He will also be instructing Women's Self Protection clinics on May 13, 20, and 27.
